A Brief History of HOPE

A vision to open a new church in Claymont, DE named HOPE Community Church began with the desire in our hearts to bring hope (the expectation of something good to come in a person’s life) to the Claymont community and even beyond! After speaking with many persons who attended weddings, funerals, and functions at Atonement United Methodist Church, it was revealed how often bad or sad experiences occurred in the church setting. Thus, this seemed to explain the popularity and growth of churches meeting in schools or other places. Merging the two ideas of bringing hope and connecting lives to Jesus Christ at a new location seemed like a winning combination. With initial funding from a congregational development grant, HOPE Community Church opened in September, 2013. Assistant Pastor of Atonement UMChurch, Amy Peters and husband Mark Peters led the heroic effort to birth the first fully contemporary worship service in the North Wilmington area. What a challenge and a faith-building experience it has been! After meeting Sundays at 11:00am for the first five years at a Montessori School, HOPE Community then agreed to worship Saturdays at 4:30pm to welcome those who work on Sunday mornings. Now as we go through the changes of Covid-19, HOPE Community Church begins a new season of meeting on Sundays at 11:00am. Our temporary meeting place is going to be under God’s great blue canopy of Creation, beginning at Pastor Amy Peters’ house, the patio at Atonement Church, at the state park, the monastery, or Lord willing- at a new facility! We are not a building, we are a movement. Join us as disciples of Jesus Christ who believe that to save one soul, is, as if, to save the whole world. Together we “BRING HOPE, CONNECT LIVES” to Christ Jesus and to one another! Yea, God!!! We celebrate God in fellowship, experience God’s heart in discipleship, serve as God’s hands, speak as God’s voice, and give glory to God in worship! Come as you are! Experience HOPE without limits!

A Note of Encouragement from the Pastor Amy...

Grace is when God gives us what we do not deserve. Mercy is when God does not give us what we do deserve.
Almighty God is the essence and embodiment of loving-kindness, wanting the very best for each one of our lives. As we look back on the history of our church, God’s grace and mercy are priceless gifts to the Body of Christ at Atonement. Together, if we seek God with a humble and teachable heart, we can discover for ourselves all God’s riches and resources for our lives, given to each one of us for the good of all the church. In His humanity, Jesus came to offer us grace and truth for this pilgrimage on earth. Spiritual habits of prayer and Bible reading/study are channels of God’s grace that connect us deeply to God and give us hope that God who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).
Your spiritual journey depends on this vital relationship of believing, growing in, and obeying the will of God as revealed to us in Christ Jesus. How has this time of the Covid-19 pandemic affected your belief and walk with Jesus? Has the Word of God become the meat that nourishes your soul? Did you let the Light of the World shine into your heart and soul revealing changes you need to make in your commitment to Christ? God has allowed us to be set apart for a reason! Our communal destiny is to be like Jesus! What kind of pruning has God been trying to do in your life over these past three months that would make you in the image of Christ your Savior? It is from the heart of God that God’s undeserved favor (grace) is given to each one of us in different ways and in different proportions. Remember, our source of grace, mercy, and truth is the Resurrected Christ whom we have been celebrating these past Great Fifty Days, post-resurrection. God’s desire for the very best for you starts with your love and devotion to your relationship with Jesus. Being with Jesus changes us, changes our hearts! “By the grace of God I am who I am, and God’s grace toward me was not in vain,” wrote Paul, the Apostle, in 1 Corinthians 15:10. From August 14, 1981 until this day of the Lord, May 28, 2020, God’s grace has been
burning in me the desire to know the One, True God who has saved me from sin, death, and separation from God for all of eternity. It is the desire of my heart that we fan the flame of revival at our church so that the lost and dying world outside our church doors will cry out for the Jesus who we know and live for! The Holy Spirit will empower us to use our God given gifts and graces to direct and lead at Atonement Church together. I want all the world to know I belong to Jesus and I pray nothing will stop us from sharing Jesus with the world that God so loved that God sent His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send Jesus into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved (John 3:16-17). And thanks be to God for saving a sinner like me and pouring out love and grace into my life.
Let the fires of the Holy Spirit consume YOU and work in YOUR lives as never before. Let us share God’s love with every person God puts in our path. Christ Jesus is depending on us! Will you join with me and declare: Here I am Lord, send me! To the glory of God! Amen.
Serving a Mighty Savior, Pastor Amy

Psalm 133 (KJV)

1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
